Day 4 – Medan
Our king bed was super comfortable and we slept very soundly. Perhaps, the long travelling time from Samosir Island via Berastagi to Medan took a toll on us. However, the sight seeing along the way was worth it rather than a boring journey back to Medan. The sun was already shinning brightly when we pulled away the curtains. So taking pictures of the sunrise over Medan had to wait till the next day.
Our first destination this morning was of course the restaurant on the second floor. A sizeable crowd was already there when we arrived. We found an empty table and took our seats and then went to inspect the buffet spread. It was comparable to our buffet dinner spread the night before minus the barbeque items. Nonetheless, the outdoor barbeque area was turned into eggs corner as well as other dim sum items counter.
The pastries section looked very good and the fresh fruits as well. Fresh fruit juice from cut fruit pieces were also available. So we took our food and enjoyed our breakfast. After several rounds with the buffet spread, we returned to our room.
Spa and Fitness Centre at Grand Aston City Hall Hotel offered 20% discount during happy hours from 9 am to 11 am. So we happily booked ourselves a treatment this morning to get our muscles relaxed and our bodies tuned back to shape. Having rested sufficiently after our very filling breakfast, we went to the Spa Centre.
We didn’t have to wait long to be ushered into a couple’s room for our treatment. The treatment room was clean and the ambience conducive with relaxing piped music in the room to set the tone for our treatments. It was a relaxing time indeed during this short hour and so quickly it was over. It was a really great feeling.
After shower, we left Grand Aston City Hall Hotel and walked towards Mederka Walk. After crossing the road, we walked along Mederka Walk which was quiet during the day. We then walked around the stadium which was not so clean with litter on the field and pavements.
Next we had to cross the road towards the Airport Railink Station. Over here, there wasn’t any traffic light. Having been to Vietnam, we had witnessed the chaotic traffic where road crossing was a challenge. Over here, it could be even more life threatening with the constant flow of vehicles instead of motorbikes on the roads in Vietnam. Thankfully, we managed to the cross this road safely.
We went into the Airport Railink Station to check out on the train schedule for our next day’s departure to Medan Airport. Having gotten the information we required, we left the station and walked up a bridge to cross over the railway tracks. After crossing the bridge, we walked towards the spanking new Centre Point Mall.
The mall was brand new and many shops were not open yet. Renovation works were still on going. However, the supermarket Lotte Mart was already in operation and a number of shops and restaurants had opened for business. This mall was rather modern in design comparable to any big malls in major cities. There were seven floors and H&M Retailer would be opened by end of that year.
So we walked up a few floors and decided to have lunch in one of the Chinese restaurants. The restaurant wasn’t crowded when we were there. The Chinese dishes we ordered were delicious and not very expensive. Having had a great lunch and after another round exploring this brand new mall, we went to the main entrance to look for a bluebird taxi.
We managed to get into one and asked the driver to send us to another mall, Sun Plaza, just a couple of minutes away. Due to heavy traffic in the city centre, we just took a little longer to arrive. Sun Plaza being one of the largest shopping malls in Medan was very busy when we were there. However, the mall looked a little old because we just came from a brand new modern mall Centre Point.
Sogo being the anchor tenant was our first destination at this mall. After some window shopping at Sogo, we left without buying anything. We then explored the hypermarket and only bought a bottle of water. So we walked around all the floors and looked at shops and we didn’t buy anything either. There were many restaurants and cafes and the mall was crowded. We couldn’t stay much longer due to cigarettes smoke in the mall that gave us a headache. Feeling nauseous, we hailed a bluebird taxi and returned to Grand Aston City Hall Hotel.
It was a great relief to be back in our very nice room. It was still early and after resting a while, we decided to head to the swimming pool. The pool was empty but there were some guests nearby smoking and having a drink. The swimming pool looked inviting and clean. So we took our plunge and had a swim this afternoon. While we enjoyed our swim in this swimming pool just for ourselves, unfortunately, those smokers drinking nearby were not doing us any favour. The wind kept blowing cigarettes smoke into the pool and spoilt our swim. Soon we left the pool and returned to our room.
Resting in our non-smoking room was a good idea. The nauseous second hand smoke at Sun Plaza and the swimming pool was too much for us. The TV with many programs as our companion kept us occupied till dinner time. The short rest was good and soon we felt the need to fill our stomach again. So off we went to the second floor restaurant.
The restaurant was empty again when we arrive. After a heavy sumptuous buffet dinner the previous night, we decided to choose something simple this time. We took their set dinner promotion and enjoyed our meals. The ambience of the restaurant was quiet and relaxing as we were a little early during this evening.
After dinner, we went down to the lobby lounge and bought some cakes. The 50% discount after 6 pm was a good deal. The cakes were put into a box and left it at the restaurant where we would collect in the morning when we check out to catch our flight back to Singapore.
We went to heritage cafe for another visit before returning to our room. Once again, we skipped our evening visit to Mederka Walk. Our room was just too comfortable and it was a great place for us to rest and watch TV. The window view of the night scene below and the glittering lights from Centre Point Mall was fascinating.
Having updated our children on our day, we enjoyed the evening in our nice and comfortable room. We were very pleased with this five stars heritage hotel. For under 700,000 IDR per night inclusive of breakfast, we were more than satisfied with the hotel’s facilities and service.
While we didn’t go out of the way to tire out ourselves this day, we were nonetheless happy with the day’s activities. So we ended our day when we were no longer able to continue with our TV programs. A good night sleep was necessary as we had a morning flight to catch hence we shut down ourselves to prepare for the next day.
