13 Days Chengdu and Chongqing Tour – Day 1 Bangkok

Flight from Singapore to Chengdu

We had wanted to visit Jiuzhaigou for quite some time. So when there was an offer from Singapore to Chengdu flying Thai Airways at only $272, we booked our flights for November. The catch was to transit in Bangkok. Instead to having a short transit from Bangkok to Chengdu where we had to take a very early flight from Singapore to Bangkok, we planned an overnight stay in Bangkok to have a more relaxing arrival in Chengdu on Day 2. Our flight details are as follows:

Singapore to Bangkok 12.25 pm to 1.45 pm
Bangkok to Chengdu 10.05 am to 2 pm on the following day

Chengdu to Bangkok 3.05 pm to 5.20 pm
Bangkok to Singapore 7.25 pm to 10.45 pm

Since we had quite a bit of time in November, we decided to visit Chongqing as well, a city in under 2 hours away from Chengdu by high speed train. We also took advantage of the Accor super sales and booked Sofitel Chengdu Taihe and Sofitel Forebase Chongqing at 50% discounts.

Sichuan Earthquake

Unfortunately, an earthquake struck Jiuzhaigou in August severely damaging the park. The park was subsequently closed for repair. So we had to make adjustment to our itinerary.

We cancelled our accommodations from Day 2 to Day 5. We would head straight from Chengdu Airport to Dujiangyan when we arrived from Bangkok on Day 2. Day 3 and Day 4 would be spent at Siguniang Shan instead before returning to spend another night in Dujiangyan. Day 6 onward would remain unchanged.

Singapore to Bangkok

November came pretty quickly. Our flight from Singapore to Bangkok was uneventful. Train ride from the airport to Ratchaprarop Station was very easy and economical. Although Patra Hotel is nearby, locating the hotel was a different story.

There was no easy pavement to walk on at the traffic junction so we walked along Ratchaprarop Road in the direction of Platinum and turned right into Wutthi Phan Alley. We then walked through an open carpark where some buses parked towards Baiyoke Sky Hotel. It was very easy to get lost in the middle of a very busy market area full of street stalls, congested with vehicles and human traffic surrounded by high rise buildings.

Right in front of Baiyoke Sky Hotel, we walked further down the street and then turned right into a side alley full of street stalls. Here we were really lost. After asking around, we walked further down the alley, turned right again into another smaller alley, Patra Hotel was just further down on the right obscured by all the street stalls.

All these alleys and streets were congested with vehicles and people and locating a hotel in a side lane was no easy task. But once we had found the hotel, everything went on smoothly. There were stalls right outside the entrance of the hotel as well. In fact, the entrance was blocked by two vehicles when we arrived making it quite difficult to get into the hotel.

Patra Boutique Hotel

Over at front desk, checking in was easy. A deposit of THB500 was required and will be returned when we checked out the next day. We were then given keys to our room.

The room was small but adequate. Furnishing was basic but modern and clean very much like Ibis Budget Hotel. Bed was comfortable enough for the night. The only complaint was the poor wifi which was horrible. After leaving behind our bags, we were ready to roam the streets in Bangkok and to have dinner.

Back to the lobby, we used the hotel’s computer to try to check in for our next day’s flight to Chengdu. Finally after getting the computer to turn on, internet was so slow. We suspected it was down much like the poor wifi reception we experienced earlier. Without wanting to waste time here, we head out to Platinum Mall. Our intention was to use the computer at Novotel Platinum Hotel to check in our flight.

Head to Platinum Mall

So we walked through the very busy streets walking through on Soi 19. Food stalls and clothes stalls were everywhere. Traffic was super heavy in the vicinity. Having walked through the entire market area through Soi 19, we emerged at Phetchaburi Road. Platinum Mall is right across the road.

We walked up to the overhead bridge and crossed over into Platinum Mall. This mall is as busy as usual with hordes of shoppers. We didn’t have any intention to shop this time but just to fill up time in Bangkok before heading to Chengdu. So we walked through the mall and went all the way up to Novotel Platinum Hotel.

Dinner at Novotel Platinum Hotel

Up at our familiar Novotel Platinum Hotel, the first thing we did was to use the computer at the lobby. Checking in our flight to Chengdu for the next day was so easy over here. It was completed very quickly without any issue where we could even change our assigned seats to sit next to each other at the windows.

Next was to head into our favourite The Square Restaurant for an early dinner. We were the only diners when we entered the restaurant. We also chose our usual table by the windows. As diners, we could ask wifi password at the restaurant for our phones. So we finally get connected with our children to inform them of our safe arrival in Bangkok.

The menu had changed but we still ordered our usual clay pot rice meals and also a pot of tea. We liked the ambiance over here, so quiet and peaceful. Our food soon came. The olive clay pot rice was a little salty this time but the dinner was good and of course as Accor Plus members, 50% discount was given.

After dinner, we used the toilet and rested in the lobby for a while. At least over here, the lobby was air-conditioned. The lobby at Patra Hotel was quite warm during the day. Finally, it was time to leave.

Night Market Outside Baiyoke Sky Hotel

We went back into Platinum Mall for a walk through and then back to the overhead bridge heading back across towards Baiyoke Sky Hotel. Soi 19 was so quiet when we returned walking back towards Patra Hotel. All the street stalls disappeared and this market area had closed for the day.

Back to the area near Baiyoke Sky Hotel, it was busy as usual with the night market with stalls selling clothes and food and other stuff. We thought of heading up to Baiyoke Sky Hotel to check out the night scene in Bangkok but the lift was so crowded with group visitors. For a fee, visitors are allowed up to the restaurant for a drink and enjoy the night scene up there where we had access when we stayed there many years back.

So we decided to explore the night market for a while. It was a very dynamic place with aroma of food everywhere. It was quite humid during the evening as well.

We then went into a massage outlet for a foot massage. It cost THB200 for an hour of foot massage. At least we could parked ourselves under air-conditioning to relax for a while. In addition, we could also use the wifi there to establish contact with the children again back home.

Back to Patra Boutique Hotel for the Night

An hour was up so quickly but we were refreshed. Walking through the busy night market area, we returned to Patra Hotel. Actually, there is a massage outlet inside the hotel as well. This massage place looks more established and modern but slightly more expensive.

With nothing else to do, we returned to our room. It was time to shower and get ourselves comfortable for the night. Patra Hotel is a decent 3-star hotel good enough for us to stay for a night. There was no point paying a lot more just for the night before heading to Chengdu for our tour proper the next day.

This area near Platinum Mall is very convenient and exciting as well. This hotel seems to be very popular too with hotel guests bringing bags and bags of shopping back to the hotel in the evening. So it was time to close for the day. The real excitement would come the next day.
